Multi-ply cutting – efficient cutting of large batches

Multi-ply cutting is the technique of laying several dozen plies of fabric on the cutting table and cutting every element of the pattern in a single pass of the knife. For a manufacturer it means a step change in output and repeatability – every ply yields an identical set of parts. PRO Clo cuts up to 80 plies on the Bullmer CNC cutter, serving both our own production and orders from external plants.

When multi-ply cutting makes sense

At series from 200 to 500 pieces multi-ply cutting almost always pays for itself in labour and material. At smaller series of 50 to 200 pieces the economics depend on the material – thin jersey cuts sensibly even in 20 plies, heavy Cordura best in 5 to 10. We set the optimal number of plies per project when preparing the marker.

How much material an optimised marker saves

With a well optimised marker material waste drops to 4 to 10 per cent, whereas hand cutting typically wastes 12 to 20 per cent. For a brand producing several thousand pieces a month that is the line that shifts the costing – marker optimisation alone usually pays for itself in the first month of cooperation.

Materials we cut multi-ply

  • jersey and clothing fabrics for contract sewing,
  • uniform and protective fabrics,
  • technical fabrics such as Cordura, ripstop and fleece,
  • upholstery fabrics for the automotive sector.

Frequently asked questions

How much material does multi-ply cutting save?

With a well optimised marker waste drops to 4 to 10 per cent, against a typical 12 to 20 per cent when cutting by hand. Over a year that is several percentage points of material saved on a mid-sized production.

Is multi-ply cutting worthwhile for a small series?

Yes, but the number of plies has to match the fabric weight – thin jersey cuts sensibly in 20 plies even at 50 to 100 pieces, heavy Cordura best in 5 to 10.

Do you need a CAD file for this?

Preferably a DXF or AAMA file. We also accept a PDF with accurate dimensioning – our technology team then prepares the cutter input file for an additional fee.
